Where it all started. Guimarães is a city located in northern Portugal, in the Braga region. The city was settled in the 9th century and its historic city center is listed as UNESCO World Heritage. The city is often referred to as the birthplace of Portugal or “the cradle city” because it is widely believed that the first king of Portugal, Afonso Henriques, was born here. Also, that the Battle of São Mamede, which made the foundation of the kingdom of Portugal, was fought here.
Easiest way to get here is via Porto. It is only around 50 km from the airport and 55 km from the central part of Porto to Guimarães.
